Admission at a glance

Shanghai Jiao Tong University is a national university in Shanghai and one of the C9 League universities most recognised abroad for engineering, medicine and business. International undergraduate admission is handled by SJTU Global College rather than by individual schools, through a holistic review of standardised test scores, secondary school transcripts, recommendation letters and a personal statement rather than a written entrance exam. Applicants submit either the China Scholastic Competency Assessment with a mathematics component, or an SAT, ACT, A-Level or IB result, alongside two recommendation letters in English, one from a school counsellor and one from a core academic teacher, and evidence of financial capacity of at least 100,000 CNY. Non-native English speakers submit TOEFL iBT 90 or above or IELTS 6 or above, with an updated, lower numeric floor stated for TOEFL sittings from January 2026 onward under its revised scale; applicants with a strong SAT or ACT score, or four years of recent schooling in English, are exempt. The most recently published cycle offered an Early Action deadline of 15 November and a Regular Application deadline of 31 March. Tuition for SJTU Global College is a flat 120,000 CNY a year, well above the typical range at other Chinese universities in this project's sample, reflecting its separate, internationally structured curriculum; the application fee is 75 USD, charged in US dollars rather than RMB. Every graduate, whatever their major, must reach HSK Level 4 in Chinese before they can graduate.

Bachelor's degree

Applicants must be a secondary school graduate or final year student and a non-Chinese passport holder. SJTU Global College requires either a China Scholastic Competency Assessment score with mathematics, or an SAT, ACT, A-Level or IB result, plus two recommendation letters in English and an official transcript. There is no separate written entrance exam.
