Admission at a glance

Peking University is a national comprehensive university in Beijing administered by the Ministry of Education, known abroad alongside Tsinghua as one of China's two leading universities. Its International Students Division runs four undergraduate pathways: a one to two year Yuke preparatory programme, the Boya Overseas Talent Training Programme, an Undergraduate Program Without Written Examination for applicants with recognised international test scores, and the main Undergraduate Program Entrance Examination. Applicants to the entrance examination route register through the online system, which for the most recently published cycle was open from 1 January to 28 February, pay an 800 CNY non refundable application fee, and undergo a qualification and materials review; those who pass sit a written examination covering Chinese, English and mathematics in late March, followed by a secondary examination in mid April. Admission documents are issued in June for a September start. Graduate applicants apply directly to English taught or Chinese taught master's and PhD programmes; the most recently published general application window for these ran from 20 October to 23 December. Chinese taught graduate programmes ask for HSK 6 with a score above 200 for science subjects or 210 for humanities subjects, while English taught programmes ask for TOEFL iBT 100 or above, or GRE 315 or above. Undergraduate tuition is 30,000 CNY a year for science and engineering programmes and 26,000 CNY a year for humanities and social sciences programmes, payable in RMB cash, by UnionPay card, or online; foreign currency and travellers cheques are not accepted.

The Undergraduate Program Without Written Examination route instead requires a recognised international standardised test score in place of PKU's own written test.

Master's and PhD

A relevant bachelor's degree, or master's degree for PhD applicants, recognised as equivalent to a Chinese degree. Chinese taught programmes require HSK 6, with a minimum overall score of 200 for science subjects or 210 for humanities subjects and a writing section of at least 65. English taught programmes require TOEFL iBT 100 or above, GRE 315 or above, or an equivalent standard set by the individual programme.
