Cost of Studying in China (2027) for International Students

Tuition for the public universities this project researched commonly runs from about 20,000 to 48,000 CNY a year for programmes taught in Chinese: Wuhan University and Harbin Institute of Technology charge from 20,000 CNY a year at the low end, while Sun Yat-sen University's medical programmes and Nanjing University's Medical School reach 42,000 to 48,000 CNY a year. English medium tuition generally costs more: Tsinghua's arts and clinical medicine programmes reach 40,000 to 70,000 CNY a year, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Global College, a separately structured international undergraduate college, charges a flat 120,000 CNY a year. Every applicant also pays a one time, non-refundable application fee, commonly 400 to 800 CNY, though Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Global College charges 75 US dollars instead of an RMB figure.

No single official government survey of living costs for international students in China was found during this research, so no national living cost figure is recorded here. Individual universities do publish some of their own figures: Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Global College estimates 3,000 CNY a month for a dormitory and 3,000 CNY a month for living expenses; Huazhong University of Science and Technology's optional accommodation runs from 700 CNY a month for a shared room to 1,200 CNY a month for a single room; and the University of Science and Technology of China quotes 500 to 1,000 CNY a month for on campus housing depending on room type. These are official, university specific figures rather than one representative national average, and living costs are generally higher in Beijing and Shanghai than in smaller cities.
