Shanghai Jiao Tong University Admission Requirements 2027

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is a national university in Shanghai and a member of China's C9 League. International undergraduate admission runs through SJTU Global College, which sets its own tuition, English test standard and holistic, document based review separate from the Gaokao route used by domestic applicants.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree

Applicants must be a secondary school graduate or final year student and a non-Chinese passport holder. SJTU Global College requires either a China Scholastic Competency Assessment score with mathematics, or an SAT, ACT, A-Level or IB result, plus two recommendation letters in English and an official transcript. There is no separate written entrance exam.

Documents

China Scholastic Competency Assessment result with mathematics, or SAT, ACT, A-Level or IB scores; an official secondary school transcript in English; two recommendation letters in English, one from a school counsellor and one from a core academic teacher; an English proficiency result unless exempt; proof of a financial deposit of at least 100,000 CNY; passport and nationality documentation, with additional requirements for applicants who have a Chinese citizen parent; and a guardian guarantee letter for applicants under 18.

How to apply

  1. Confirm eligibility as a non-Chinese passport holder who is a secondary school graduate or final year student.
  2. Prepare the China Scholastic Competency Assessment, or an SAT, ACT, A-Level or IB result, and an English test unless exempt.
  3. Submit the online application to SJTU Global College by the Early Action deadline, 15 November, or the Regular Application deadline, 31 March, in the most recently published cycle.
  4. Upload transcripts, recommendation letters, financial proof and identity documents.
  5. Wait for the admission decision from SJTU Global College.
  6. If accepted, apply for the JW201 or JW202 form and an X1 student visa before travelling to China.

English test waiver

SJTU Global College, which handles international undergraduate admission, asks for TOEFL iBT 90 or above, or IELTS 6 or above, for non-native English speakers; for TOEFL exams sat from January 2026 the university states a minimum of 4.5 on the new scale, with 5 recommended. Applicants may submit an SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 650 or above, an equivalent ACT score, or four years of recent study in English, instead of a language test. All graduates must reach HSK Level 4 to meet SJTU's graduation requirement, regardless of the language of instruction.
