What you need
The X1 visa is for study in China lasting more than 180 days. Applicants need a valid passport, a completed visa application form, a recent passport photo, the original Admission Notice from the Chinese school or university, and the original Visa Application for Study in China Form, known as JW201 for Chinese Government Scholarship holders or JW202 for self funded students. Most missions also ask for a completed Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Short term study of 180 days or less instead uses the separate X2 visa; some missions, including periods at the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh, have not accepted X2 applications, so the current notice should be checked before applying with anything other than a long term study plan. Bangladeshi applicants submit through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center in Dhaka rather than the embassy directly; the ordinary single entry visa fee for a Bangladeshi passport is 2,400 Taka, with an additional service centre handling fee and an optional courier fee on top. Visa fees for other nationalities differ, since China sets its visa fee by reciprocity with the applicant's own country.
The visa fee depends on your nationality, because China sets it by reciprocity: the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka lists BDT 2,400 for Bangladeshi applicants, and other embassies publish their own schedules. Check the embassy or visa centre that serves your country.
How to apply
- Gain admission to a Chinese university and receive the Admission Notice.
- Obtain the JW201 form if awarded a Chinese Government Scholarship, or the JW202 form if self funded, from the university or the China Scholarship Council.
- Complete the online visa application form and book an appointment with the Chinese Visa Application Service Center serving your country; applicants in Bangladesh use the Dhaka centre.
- Submit the passport, application form, photo, Admission Notice and JW form in person, and pay the visa fee, 2,400 Taka for a single entry ordinary visa for a Bangladeshi passport, plus the service centre's own handling fee.
- Collect the passport with the X1 visa, typically within 4 working days for regular service.
- Enter China and, within 30 days, apply for a residence permit at the local exit and entry administration, presenting a letter from the school confirming the length of study and the admission or enrolment certificate.
Why applications are refused
A visa can be refused if the Admission Notice or JW form is missing, inconsistent or unverifiable, if the application form is incomplete, if the passport does not meet validity or blank page requirements, or if supporting documents raise doubts about the applicant's intention to study or ability to support themselves. The visa centre may also request an in-person interview or additional documents before deciding.
