Admission at a glance

The University of Washington, based in Seattle, runs undergraduate admission differently from most large public universities: it has no separate early action or early decision plan and instead uses a single application window that opens around September 1 and closes November 15 for autumn entry. International first year applicants use the same window and the same review process as domestic applicants, so there is one deadline to track rather than several.

UW does not use SAT or ACT scores in its regular review, and academic performance in a rigorous secondary school curriculum carries the most weight. International applicants whose secondary schooling was not conducted in an exempt English speaking country or system must submit an English proficiency score from TOEFL, IELTS or the Duolingo English Test, taken no later than December 31 of the year they apply.

Admission to the Seattle campus was moderately selective in the most recently reported cycle, admitting a little over four in ten applicants across all residencies, based on the university's own Common Data Set. International students make up a significant share of both applicants and admits. UW publishes a detailed annual expense estimate for international students that separates tuition and fees from living costs and mandatory health insurance, which the university uses to certify the funds needed for the F-1 visa.
