UW reviews secondary school transcripts for course rigor and grades and does not use SAT or ACT scores in admission decisions. International applicants whose secondary education was not in an exempt country or system must submit an English proficiency score from TOEFL, IELTS or the Duolingo English Test, taken no later than December 31 of the application year, sent directly by the testing agency.
Documents
The UW application (Coalition Application or ASSIST, the shared Washington state application), official secondary school transcripts, personal statement and short answer responses, an English proficiency score where required, and, after admission, financial documentation for the international student office to issue the Form I-20.
How to apply
- Apply through the Coalition Application or ASSIST between roughly September 1 and November 15 for autumn entry.
- Submit official secondary school transcripts and the required personal statement and short answer responses.
- Send an English proficiency score directly from the testing agency if required, dated no later than December 31.
- Pay the 95 dollar international application fee; fee waivers are not available for international applicants.
- After admission, submit financial documentation so UW's international student office can issue the I-20.
English test waiver
Applicants whose primary and secondary education took place in Australia, Canada (English speaking provinces), the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand or the United States are exempt from the English proficiency requirement. UW does not list PTE Academic among its accepted tests. From January 21, 2026, TOEFL iBT also reports a 4.0 minimum on its redesigned scale alongside the older 76 on the 0 to 120 scale. Test scores must be dated on or before December 31 of the application year.
