Admission at a glance

The University of New Brunswick, known as UNB, was founded in 1785 and describes itself as Canada's oldest English-language public university, with its larger campus in Fredericton and a second campus in Saint John. Admission is based on the applicant's secondary school record in the courses required for the chosen program, and UNB applies directly rather than through a shared provincial application service. English proficiency is required unless the applicant is exempt, through a recognized test such as IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or Duolingo; Nursing, Education and Arts programs on the Fredericton campus, along with Nursing and Health Sciences on the Saint John campus, require a higher IELTS score than general admission. Applicants who fall short of the English requirement but are otherwise admissible can take a full-time pathway program, such as PAEP in Fredericton or Saint John College's EAP program, before starting their degree. UNB bills international tuition per program and per campus rather than one flat rate, and Engineering costs more per year than Arts; students also pay mandatory fees that include a bus pass and international health and travel insurance on top of tuition. UNB's general undergraduate deadline of 31 March applies every year rather than being announced separately for each cycle, though the university recommends international applicants intending to start in September apply by 1 June to allow enough time for a study permit.

Bachelor of Education (Fredericton and Saint John), Kinesiology and Nursing admit for the Fall term only and have their own earlier deadlines. There is no single published minimum average across all programs.
