Admission at a glance

McGill University, in Montreal, teaches primarily in English even though it operates within Quebec's French majority province, and international applicants from outside Quebec follow the same general admission process as applicants from the rest of Canada. Admission to most faculties, including Arts, Science, Arts and Science, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Management and Music, is based on the applicant's academic record in the specific courses each program lists as prerequisites, assessed against the grading conventions of the applicant's own education system rather than a single converted average. Popular programs such as Management and many Engineering programs are more competitive in practice than the published minimum entry standard suggests. English proficiency is required from applicants who do not meet one of several exemptions, such as having studied full time in English for the last three years; IELTS, CAEL and PTE Academic are among the accepted tests, each with its own minimum. Students admitted to an undergraduate program are guaranteed the same per-credit tuition rate for the normal length of that program, so long as they do not change program or break their enrolment, though ancillary fees such as health insurance and student society fees still rise by about 3 percent a year. McGill charges a single non-refundable application fee that covers up to two program choices at the same level in the same term.

Requirements

Bachelor

Admission requirements are set out by educational system (for example GCE A Level, IB Diploma, French Baccalaureat, US high school, or Quebec CEGEP) on McGill's own requirements pages, and list the specific subjects and grades each program expects. There is no single published minimum average across all programs; Management, Engineering and Science tend to be the most competitive.

Graduate

Set by the individual department; applicants should confirm the required undergraduate background, references and, for research programs, a supervisor, before applying.
