Requirements
Bachelor's degree
Applicants need a completed senior high school education and a valid passport. English taught tracks require IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 85 or above, unless exempt as a native speaker or a graduate of an English medium school; Chinese taught tracks require HSK Level 5 with a score of at least 180.
Master's and PhD
A relevant bachelor's degree, or master's degree for PhD applicants, plus a department set language requirement, commonly IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80 to 90 for English taught programmes, or HSK Level 5 with a score of at least 180 for Chinese taught programmes.
Documents
Passport copy, high school diploma and transcripts, or degree certificate and transcripts for graduate applicants, an HSK or English test result matching the programme's language of instruction, a personal statement or research plan, recommendation letters, and a physical examination report.
How to apply
- Identify the correct enrolment guide for your level, bachelor's, master's or doctoral, since Tongji publishes these separately with different deadlines.
- Apply online within the published window for your chosen scholarship track or the self funded route.
- Pay the 600 CNY non refundable application fee.
- Submit transcripts, the language test or HSK result, and supporting documents.
- Wait for the admission decision from the International Students Office.
- Apply for the JW201 or JW202 form and an X1 student visa before travelling to China; pay the 800 CNY a year insurance premium at registration.
English test waiver
Tongji's undergraduate English taught tracks ask for an IELTS certificate scoring at least 6.5, or a TOEFL iBT certificate scoring at least 85; native English speakers and graduates of schools taught in English are exempt. Master's and PhD programmes set their own, generally lower figure, commonly IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 or TOEFL 80 to 90 depending on the department. Programmes taught in Chinese instead ask for HSK Level 5 with a score of at least 180, waived for applicants whose prior degree was taught in Chinese.
