Requirements

Bachelor's degree

Applicants need a completed senior high school education and a valid passport. Almost all majors require an HSK Level 5 certificate scoring at least 180; the Chinese as a Second Language and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages majors accept HSK Level 4 at the same score. There is no separate English test for the bachelor's degree programme.

Master's and PhD

A relevant bachelor's degree, or master's degree for PhD applicants. English taught programmes ask non-native English speakers for an IELTS score of around 6.0 or a TOEFL iBT score of around 80, or documentation that a previous degree was taught in English; individual programmes, such as the Business School's English taught PhD, may set a higher figure.

Documents

Notarised high school diploma and transcripts, or degree certificate and transcripts for graduate applicants, an HSK certificate for the bachelor's degree or an IELTS or TOEFL result for English taught graduate programmes, a China Scholastic Competency Assessment report for undergraduate applicants, a teacher's recommendation letter, a handwritten personal statement, a passport copy, and a certificate of no criminal record.

English test waiver

Beijing Normal University's bachelor's degree programme for international students is taught entirely in Chinese: most majors require HSK Level 5 with a score of at least 180, while the Chinese as a Second Language and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages majors accept HSK Level 4 with a score of at least 180. There is no separate IELTS or TOEFL requirement for the bachelor's degree itself. The recorded ielts_min and toefl_min figures (6.0 and 80) instead come from BNU's general master's degree brochure, which asks non-native English speakers applying to English taught master's programmes for an IELTS or TOEFL score at that level, or documentation that their previous degree was taught in English.
