Utrecht University Admission Requirements 2027

Utrecht University is a large public research university with programmes across the humanities, sciences, medicine, law and social sciences. Non-EEA bachelor's tuition varies by programme, from about EUR 12,068 to EUR 28,416 a year, and non-EU applicants must complete their application by 1 April.

Requirements

Bachelor

A secondary qualification recognised as giving access to university-level study, meeting the chosen programme's own subject prerequisites. English proficiency at Utrecht's EMI-ready level is required: IELTS Academic 6.0 overall (5.5 in writing and speaking, 6.0 in listening and reading) or TOEFL iBT 83 overall, unless exempt.

Master

A relevant bachelor's degree meeting the specific master's programme's own grade and subject requirements; English proficiency requirements are set per programme and can exceed the bachelor's EMI-ready floor.

Documents

Diploma and transcript of secondary (and, where relevant, higher) education, certified translation if not in Dutch or English, passport copy, and an English test certificate no more than two years old unless exempt. Master's applicants also submit their bachelor's degree certificate or a transcript showing progress, plus any programme-specific documents such as a motivation letter or CV.

How to apply

Register in Studielink for your chosen bachelor's or master's programme.
Complete Utrecht's own online application and pay the EUR 100 application fee if applying with a non-Dutch diploma.
Upload your diploma, transcript and English test result before the deadline; non-EU bachelor's applications must be complete by 1 April.
If admitted and from outside the EU/EEA, apply for a residence permit for study with Utrecht University as your recognised sponsor.
Pay the tuition invoice and arrange health insurance and housing before enrolling.

English test waiver

Utrecht assesses bachelor's applicants against its EMI-ready level; students who completed prior education taught fully in English, or who hold an accepted Cambridge grade, may be exempt from a separate IELTS or TOEFL certificate. Check the programme page for the exact exemption rule.
