Admission at a glance

Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, known as TUFS, is a national university in Tokyo built around the study of foreign languages, regions and international affairs. Its School of Japan Studies runs an English-Speaker Track entrance examination aimed at applicants who want to study Japan in depth but are not yet ready to study in Japanese; teaching in this track mixes Japanese and English rather than being entirely in English, and the university describes the language of instruction as Japanese/English rather than English only. Selection is a two-stage process: a first document screening that reviews academic transcripts and an English proficiency score, followed by a second-stage online interview for applicants who pass. TUFS also runs a Graduate School of Global Studies with several English-medium master's and doctoral routes, including a joint programme with Central European University reserved for a small number of TUFS students already enrolled in the graduate school, which is not a general entry point for new international applicants. Undergraduate international applicants who want a broader choice of subject areas can also apply to other faculties through the standard EJU-based route, which expects Japanese proficiency. Tuition follows the national university standard rate across programmes.

Requirements

Bachelor

The School of Japan Studies English-Speaker Track admits applicants who have completed secondary education and are not yet proficient in Japanese. First screening reviews transcripts and an English proficiency score; TUFS states a TOEFL iBT equivalent of 72 for this track. A second-stage online interview follows for shortlisted applicants.

Master

TUFS graduate schools, in particular the Graduate School of Global Studies, offer English-medium routes for specific programmes; the HIPS dual degree with Central European University is limited to five TUFS students a year and is not a general international application route, so it is not listed here as a standalone intake.
