Sophia University is a private, Jesuit-founded university in Chiyoda, central Tokyo, with a long history of educating both Japanese and international students. Its Faculty of Liberal Arts (FLA) is a fully English-taught undergraduate degree, open to applicants who have completed, or are on track to complete, 12 years of education outside Japan, an IB Diploma, or GCE A-Levels, and it accepts both first-year applicants and junior-level transfer students.

FLA admits twice a year: a Spring entry, with applications running through most of November into early December for a start the following spring, and a smaller Autumn entry, applying in March for a start that same autumn. Both routes are assessed by document screening rather than a campus exam, with results issued about two months after the deadline. Sophia is a private university and charges its own tuition, independent of the national rate most public and national universities in this dataset use, together with a JPY 35,000 non-refundable application fee. The university also runs other English-taught undergraduate options, including a Faculty of Science and Technology programme, admitted separately from FLA.

Requirements

Bachelor's (Faculty of Liberal Arts)

Applicants need to have completed, or be on track to complete, 12 years of education outside Japan, or hold an IB Diploma or GCE A-Levels; junior-level transfer applicants need equivalent standing from a recognised university. No Japanese ability is required; instruction is entirely in English.

Master's and PhD

Each graduate school sets its own requirements and deadline; a relevant Bachelor's degree (or Master's degree for doctoral study) is the general baseline.
