Requirements
Bachelor's (International Undergraduate Programs)
Applicants need to have completed, or be on track to complete, 12 years of school education recognised as equivalent to Japanese upper secondary school, along with any subject prerequisites the specific programme sets (for example, mathematics and physics for the Engineering tracks). No Japanese ability is required at entry.
Master's and PhD
Each graduate school sets its own requirements and deadline; a relevant Bachelor's degree (or Master's degree for doctoral study) recognised as equivalent to a Japanese degree is the general baseline.
Documents
An online application, secondary school transcripts and certificates, an English test score (TOEFL or IELTS) or proof of English-medium prior study, and any further documents set out in that programme's own yearly application instructions (for example a statement of purpose or references). Physical copies of supporting documents are mailed to the university after the online registration step.
How to apply
- Choose your programme (Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, an Engineering track, or Bioresource and Bioenvironment) and download that year's own Application Instructions PDF.
- Prepare your transcripts and English test score, or evidence of English-medium prior study.
- Register through the online application system within the published window, then mail any required physical documents; for October 2027 entry, online registration ran 7 to 11 December 2026.
- Wait for the admission decision.
- If accepted, Kyushu University's admissions office helps arrange your Certificate of Eligibility; use it to apply for a student visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate before travelling.
- Enrol in Fukuoka, arrange health insurance and register your address.
English test waiver
Kyushu's International Undergraduate Programs generally ask for TOEFL iBT 80 (PBT 550) or IELTS Academic 6.0, or documented proof of a period of study conducted in English, as an alternative to a test score. Individual programmes (Engineering, Bioresource and Bioenvironment, and the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation) publish their own application instructions each year, which can set a different or additional requirement.
