Requirements
Bachelor's (Integrated Global Studies)
Applicants need to have completed, or be on track to complete, 12 years of school education recognised as equivalent to Japanese upper secondary school. No Japanese ability is required; English test thresholds differ by selection system, with System C (on-campus) set lower than Systems A, B and D.
Master's and PhD
Each graduate school sets its own requirements and deadline; a relevant Bachelor's degree (or Master's degree for doctoral study) recognised as equivalent to a Japanese degree is the general baseline.
Documents
An application form, academic transcripts, proof of graduation or expected graduation, an English proficiency test score or exemption evidence (such as an IB Diploma or three years of English-medium secondary schooling), a passport copy, a photograph, and any further documents the specific selection system's Application Guide lists.
How to apply
- Choose a selection system based on where you are applying from and when you can sit the exam: System A (around July, overseas), System B (November, overseas), System C (November, on campus, lower English threshold) or System D (February, on campus).
- Prepare your transcripts and an English test score meeting that system's threshold, or your exemption evidence.
- Submit your application within that system's own window; check the current year's Application Guide for the exact opening and closing days, since only the month is published on the general admissions page.
- Sit the written exam and any interview for your chosen system.
- If accepted, Hiroshima University's international office helps arrange your Certificate of Eligibility; use it to apply for a student visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate before travelling.
- Enrol in Higashihiroshima for the April intake; IGS has no September or October entry.
English test waiver
The Department of Integrated Global Studies (IGS) sets its English requirement by selection system: Systems A, B and D ask for TOEFL iBT 72, IELTS 5.5, Cambridge English 160 or TOEIC (L&R plus S&W x2.5) 1,560; System C, an on-campus route, asks for a lower TOEFL iBT 44, IELTS 4.0, Cambridge English 140 or TOEIC 1,150. Applicants with three or more years of secondary education taught in English, or an IB Diploma, are exempt.
