Requirements

Bachelor

Admission is based on the applicant's academic record in the final two years of secondary school, in the specific prerequisite subjects the chosen program lists (for example, calculus for most Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering programs). There is no single published minimum average; competitiveness varies by program and by year. Applicants from an international curriculum (IB, A Level, French Baccalaureat, US high school and others) are assessed against system specific guidance the university publishes. Some programs, including Computer Science at St. George, Commerce, and Theatre and Drama Studies at Mississauga, require a supplementary application, portfolio or audition.

Graduate

Requirements are set by the individual graduate unit (department or faculty); applicants should check the specific program page for the required undergraduate background, references and, for research programs, a supervisor or research proposal.

Documents

Official secondary school (and, where applicable, post-secondary) transcripts; proof of English proficiency unless exempt; a supplementary application, portfolio or audition recording for programs that require one; a copy of the passport information page for the study permit application later in the process.

How to apply

1. Choose a program and confirm its prerequisite subjects and English test minimum on the program's own page.
2. Apply through OUAC (Ontario residents and applicants who want to apply to more than one Ontario university) or the University of Toronto International Application (applicants outside Canada applying only to U of T).
3. Submit or arrange for transcripts and English test scores to reach the university electronically.
4. Complete any supplementary application, profile or audition your program requires, by its own deadline.
5. Track the application through the Join U of T applicant portal, respond to any document requests, and accept an offer once received.
6. Apply for a study permit once you hold a letter of acceptance and, for study in Ontario, a provincial attestation letter.

English test waiver

Applicants who completed several years of full-time study taught in English, or who meet one of the university's other listed exemptions, do not need to submit a test score. TOEFL iBT scores from tests taken on or after 21 January 2026 are reported on a new 1 to 6 scale; the university's minimum on that scale is 4.5 overall.
