University of Southampton Admission 2027

Southampton is a research intensive university on England's south coast with strengths in engineering, computer science, oceanography and health sciences. It sets English language requirements through nine named bands rather than one university wide score, so the level needed depends on the course. Postgraduate taught study has no single fixed deadline; undergraduate applications follow the national UCAS calendar.

Admission at a glance

Southampton takes undergraduate applications through UCAS on the national calendar: 18:00 UK time on 13 January 2027 is the equal consideration deadline for 2027 entry, and medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine or science courses across the UK follow an earlier 15 October 2026 deadline instead. English language ability is set through nine bands, A to I, with each course's offer letter naming the band it needs. Band C, which many standard courses use, asks for IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in every skill, or the equivalent 67 on PTE Academic and 120 on Duolingo; bands A and B sit lower at 6.0 overall, and bands F to I sit higher at 7.0 overall. Test results must normally be shown by 31 July in the year of entry. Applicants from a majority English speaking country, or holding UK GCSE English Language at grade 4 or C, are usually exempt from a separate test, subject to a minimum academic standard of English.

Undergraduate overseas tuition is set by subject rather than as one flat rate: Nursing, Midwifery and Occupational Therapy sit at the lower end, classroom based arts and business courses in the middle, laboratory sciences and engineering higher again, and the clinical years of Medicine at the top. Postgraduate taught applications have no single university wide deadline; Southampton states that there is no fixed closing date for taught or research programmes, though individual academic units or country specific intakes can close earlier, so it advises applying as early as possible and notes that a deposit, commonly GBP 2,000, secures a place once an offer is accepted.
