Tohoku University is a national research university in Sendai and one of Japan's oldest imperial universities. From 2027 it launches Gateway College, a new interdisciplinary undergraduate programme taught primarily in English with separate April and October admission cycles, replacing its earlier Future Global Leadership Program.

Tohoku University charges the standard national rate to every student regardless of nationality: JPY 535,800 a year in tuition, a JPY 282,000 admission fee, and a non-refundable entrance examination fee of JPY 17,000 for undergraduate applicants and JPY 30,000 for graduate applicants. Students experiencing financial hardship can apply for a partial or full waiver of the admission fee and tuition. All students separately pay for compulsory accident and liability insurance, roughly JPY 2,430 to JPY 7,800 depending on programme length and field.
