Rutgers-New Brunswick reviews secondary school transcripts for grades and course rigor; SAT and ACT scores are not required through the 2027 admission cycle. International applicants whose secondary schooling was outside the United States in a country where English is not the principal language submit a TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test or PTE Academic score meeting the New Brunswick campus minimum.

The Rutgers Application or Common Application, official secondary school transcripts, an English proficiency score where required, and, after admission, financial documentation so Rutgers can issue the Form I-20 for the F-1 visa.
How to apply
- Apply through the Rutgers Application or Common Application by the early action or regular decision deadline, selecting New Brunswick.
- Submit official secondary school transcripts.
- Submit an English proficiency score meeting the New Brunswick campus minimum if required.
- Pay the 70 dollar nonrefundable application fee or request a fee waiver.
- After admission, submit financial documentation so Rutgers can issue the I-20.
English test waiver
These figures apply to the New Brunswick campus; Rutgers-Newark and Rutgers-Camden set their own slightly different minimums. The Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy and the School of Nursing require a higher TOEFL score of 100 and a higher Duolingo score of 130. English proficiency may be waived case by case for applicants who attended an English medium school. From January 22, 2026, TOEFL iBT also reports a 4.5 minimum on its redesigned scale for New Brunswick, alongside the older 79 on the 0 to 120 scale.
