Requirements
Bachelor
Admission is based on the applicant's secondary school record in the courses required for the chosen program; specific prerequisite courses and competitive averages vary by program. There is no single published minimum average across all programs.
Graduate
Set by the individual department; applicants should confirm requirements, references and, for research programs, a supervisor, on the specific program's page.
Documents
Official transcripts in required prerequisite courses; English proficiency test results unless exempt; a copy of the passport information page for the later study permit application; additional documents such as a portfolio or audition for programs that require one.
How to apply
- Confirm your program's prerequisite courses and English test minimum.
- Apply either directly to Carleton or through OUAC (form 105 for applicants outside Ontario, including international applicants), and pay the application fee.
- Arrange transcripts and English test scores to reach Carleton.
- Track your application and respond to document requests through Carleton's applicant portal.
- Accept an offer of admission and pay the CAD 2,000 tuition deposit.
- Apply for a study permit.
English test waiver
Applicants who fall just short of the standard requirement may be admitted with an ESL condition (IELTS 5.0, TOEFL iBT 51, PTE 31 or Duolingo 80) and complete Academic ESL courses alongside their regular coursework in their first terms rather than a separate pathway program. TOEFL iBT scores from tests taken on or after 21 January 2026 use a new 1 to 6 scale; Carleton's minimum on that scale is 4.5 overall.
